The Purpose of the Web Site

Taiwan is a vibrant archipelago just off the coast of China. It is home to over 20 million people, most of which are fluent in at least 2 languages, Mandarin and typically one other dialect thereof (including Hakka and Taiwanese [Hoklo, Southern Min]). Among the interests of its citizens is that of learning other languages. English and Japanese are the two most popular foreign languages and both are big business in Taiwan. However, while there are vast numbers of schools teaching foreign languages, there are very few places for learning the very unique and colorful Southern Min (Taiwanese) that is spoken by over half of the people who call Taiwan home.

Both being married to someone who is Taiwanese and passionate about learning have prompted me to start learning Taiwanese. And I learned quickly that Taiwanese is not easy. It is a tonal language, which includes up to 9 different tones, and has a complex system of sandhi that is sure to give even the most passionate learner a headache. Were those not challenges enough, the methods of recording Taiwanese using alphabet systems (Romanization) are rivaled only by the stars in number. Furthermore, teaching materials are as hit-and-miss as anyone could imagine with very few in English. And as any foreigner who has ever ventured into the world of Taiwanese language learning can tell you, these aspects only add to the effort you must put forth to acquire a working knowledge of the language. (NOTE: Let "mastery" be a later goal.)

Because of all this, I wanted to share my adventure in learning Taiwanese by making the materials I prepared for myself with likeminded individuals. I'll provide freely materials and tips that can make it a little easier for anyone interested in learning Taiwanese. Throughout this linguistic journey, feedback is encouraged and welcome because along the way I'm sure to make mistakes, which is one of the best ways to learn how to correctly use a language.

Please come learn along with me! Jump into this wonderfully complex and colorful language that may likely be a key to understanding both the past and the future of the wonderful country of Taiwan.
